Patternmaking is a language.  It's kind of like a puzzle. Puzzles are to be  supposed fun.

The game here is that you want the pieces to fit together so you can assemble them into a whole. And you want that whole to look a certain way, and move and fit a certain way.  And those aesthetci rules aren't RULES, they are CHOICES and DECISIONS.

While it can seem intimidating at the beginning- (that's part of what I try to soften)   Patternmaking IS TOTALLY "FIGURE-OUTABLE!" and you can get "in" on it more easily the way I teach it.

I used to use commercial patterns before I went to fashion school at Parsons as a design student,. I first learned to sew from them, but I never used them again after I learned the things i teach  you here.

I was so frustrated by all that delicate tissue paper and zillions of mysterious  markings,  that resulted in garments that NEVER FIT! I felt like I was buying garments I couldn't try on! I also didn't understand how to make alterations to them.

(Nowadays, if anything, I would buy a GARMENT I love as a sample,  and make my own patterns from THEM, and also make changes to customize them however I want. At least that way, I've tried on the piece before investing the time in sewing it.

WHILE THIS CLASS IS CONTENT RICH,  Just even the first few lesson modules alone will change the way you see patterns and clothes FOREVER!

IT'S YOUR TURN.

You don't  need to have a pattern studio or large space to work in. You don't need a dress form, although if you do you can do the draping exercises along with me but even watching them with care is going to change you.

You can do the exercises at 1/4 scale at your own desk or lap if you prefer, I  supply you with 1/4 scale sloper set of basic patterns (sleeve, bodice and skirt) that you can use to infinitely create from to discover this art form.

Many pattern classes go over your head.

if you look at a pattern book, all you see is symbols and measurements.  It isn't about putting "exactly 1/4 " there or here".  it's also about WHY and HOW you use space.  What you need  is a human being like me (though I'm one-of-a-kind) to break it down so you understand WHY you want a half inch here, a 1/4 inch there.

Patternmaking (and Draping) Demystified about understanding,

it's about knowing how it all goes together to create your own.  We all deserve to learn this basic language and how it works behind the scenes to make or modify a pattern.  It helps if you already sew, to take this course, but the course is for everyone who WANTS TO KNOW MORE.   The course is LOADED with information for you to be empowered, free, creative  and wise in garment-making and problem-solving.

The learning is in the DOING. Let's DO. It becomes second nature over the repeated experiences and integration of skills.

I'm a fashion designer  and educator  who's been teaching at Parsons School of Design since 1997 in both draping, construction and sewing in BFA program, as well as Illustration, model drawing, portfolio and concept development on campus and online!

Patternmaking was the very first class I taught when I was invited to teach at Parsons, It was a six hour studio class that met 30 weeks (two semesters).  That's 180 hours of fashion patternmaking! The next few years I was teaching a class of the same length that was Construction and Draping.

I'm  also a Craftsy/Bluprint  instructor/course creator  with a course called Designing Fashion Flats -and also created Parsons' very  first online fashion studio course in 2008!  My books are available on Amazon. The Language of Fashion Design: 26 Principles Every Fashion Designer Should Know and co-author of the Fashion Designer's Reference and Specification book.

I'm a single mom and Fashion Illustration Tribe is my dream to create fashion courses like the university ones but make them available to creatives everywhere, even if they need to be home with their kids or studying after work,  I want to connect and inspire and create with you  so that you can learn all of the tools my teachers taught me.

2. have experience under your belt from testing out techniques in the exercises. 
3. be able to make fit adjustments and creative variations on patterns with know-how that understands how adjustments affect a basic pattern. 
4. have a workbook of drafts that you've already tried on 1/4 scale. 
5. know the names for things and how they are "built".
