Embodiment Matters

We are Somatic Naturalists and Embodiment Mentors. We are honored to steward of a living body of work we call Integrative Embodiment. We live in beautiful Salt Lake City, Utah, with our amazing 10-year old son, a wild and wonderful kitty and a bunch of hilarious hens. We are trained as Feldenkrais Practitioners, Embodied Life Instructors, Tai Chi teachers, a yoga teacher and therapist (Erin) and a Structural Integrator (Carl.) We are also long-time meditators. Erin is also a facilitator of Joanna Macy's pioneering Work That Reconnects. We host a podcast, write, work with private clients, teach courses, workshops, and retreats and we absolutely LOVE our work. We're so happy you're here!

About this course

Each weekday from May 1-31st,  I will share a current favorite poem with you. Knowing me, I might not be able to help myself from sharing a few extras! I’ll post a written poem and a link to me (or someone else) reading the poem to you.

You can keep your participation as simple as just reading (or listening to) a poem each day, or you might take some time to reflect, comment, and interact with other participants about the ways the poem touches you. We can geek out together!

You don't need to be anywhere at any certain time - the poems will be there for you to interact with at your own perfect timing.

Poetry over morning coffee? A poem on a lunch break? A poem before bed? It is totally up to you.

You might even like to join me and do a brief writing in response to the poem. The course and poems will remain available for at least a year. All you need is an internet connection. You can participate from anywhere in the world. Easy peasy!

Reading poetry is something I do regularly and I would love your company in relishing it!

One of my mentors, Francis Weller, says that two major forces in our culture are anesthesia and amnesia. We numb out, and we forget what is most important.

Poetry reminds us.

Poetry un-numbs us.

It wakes us up, makes us laugh, makes us weep, makes us gasp.

It helps us to see clearly, to remember the deeper truths, and to reorient to that which is most important.

Even in the midst of a crazy day, a few minutes spent reading a poem can be soooooo nourishing.

Better than pausing to sip a cup of your favorite tea, watching its steam curling in a sunbeam.

It can be as delight-full as a walk in the woods, leaving all your senses refreshed.

And importantly, it can be a healing balm for the hardness and heaviness of heart which is so contagious these days.

There will be no dissecting and analyzing poems, nor will we be extracting intellectual meanings. You’ll be invited to read and/or listen to a potent poem, with an invitation to notice how your heart and body resonate with it.

It's like an invitation to gaze upon and smell a flower, rather than pulling it apart and analyzing it.

Short and sweet and soul-healing.

I have a knack for discovering fantastic poems and I would LOVE to revel in them with you!

I hope you'll join me for a month of poetic appreciation!
