This is the online adaptation of my "Drawing Practice" and "Journal Practice" classes. These classes were designed to develop key drawing and visual journaling skills. Now online students can participate in these classes!

When you register you will be able to watch the welcome video and learn about the class goals and supplies so that you can prepare for class, even though the class hasn't started yet.
On Sunday, March 31, 2019 the first set of drawing lessons will be available to registered students.
What to Expect:
In this class I will introduce you to drawing exercises and approaches that develop the skills necessary to work quickly and accurately while sketching live subjects in public.
Every Sunday and Wednesday from March 31 through April 28, a new lesson will open.
Each lesson contains video lecture, written discussion, demonstration videos, and DAILY homework.
The daily homework is critical if you are to create a strong foundation on which to build a drawing practice. (Expect to spend a minimum of 30 minutes a day on homework, exclusive of video viewing time. There are also some hour long sketching out sessions you'll need to schedule.)
Approaches to working in public and dealing with your internal critic are another crucial part of the class.
I will monitor the classroom to answer questions during the month of class.
There will be two live webinars, usually on Fridays, during the month of class. These will provide additional teacher-student interaction time. Video tapes of these sessions will be available so that you can revisit them, or watch them if you can’t attend the live event.
There is also an extensive FAQ built from past classes which registered students have access to.
The goal for this class is to spend 30 days building a durable drawing-in-public habit!
Students completing this course are invited to join the private Drawing Practice group on Facebook where they can continue to work on how they write about their work, make goals, assess goals, and share work with similarly focused students.
Students will have access to the course videos and resources, including the discussion groups through December 31, 2020.
Please see the FAQ about my classes to learn how this access time will be extended as long as I am able to support the platform. Students will be notified on a yearly basis in December 2020 and beyond.
This class is great for artists of all abilities: people who are just beginning to sketch, or people who already sketch proficiently, but want to build a regular drawing habit. It is also helpful for people who find their attempts to begin a daily or regular drawing practice frustrated by their internal critic.
Class has been designed to get you moving out into the world—to sketch in public. The focus is on sketching live subjects. I have a preference for sketching animals, but all these techniques work with humans equally well. I will address specific techniques for sketching people.
If it's winter where you live you can still join in—plan to "sketch out" at public places like shopping malls, cafes, and city gathering spots where people collect. The point is to get out and practice. Put in some time now so you'll be ready to sketch on an upcoming trip or family event. It's always the right time to start a drawing practice!

You can complete this course with nothing more than a pencil and some bond paper, but if you would like to broaden your experience I have created a small list of supplies. Please go to this link on my blog for a downloadable PDF of the supply list. (Don't worry that the PDF is titled "July 2015" the supplies are still the same.)
If you can do all the assignments with a pencil and bond paper why do I specify the Strathmore 500 Series Mixed Media 7.25 x 9.25 inch journal? This paper is my favorite workhorse paper. It works with ALL the media I use in the class demos, I did the demos on this paper. Also the size of this journal is perfect—not too small, not too large. It will give you some space to breathe and play with line. I've found that most students like to have their class work in one journal. When I teach my in-person drawing classes we bind up our own journals using this paper. So as you can tell. I really like this paper. (And I'm not receiving compensation from Strathmore either.) Feel free to work on other papers and in other sketchbooks. Depending on the paper type you may have mixed results with some assignments, but you'll know immediately where the difficulty lies. Paper suggestions are common in-class comments from me when I see how students are working on their paper.
