Painter 2021: “Loads of New Stuff”
As in previous "what’s new classes," Painter 2021, "Loads of New Stuff" focuses on the new or enhanced features. The class is primarily for intermediate or advanced users, but I still encourage beginners to join. With a new version, we are all beginners, right? However, if you have never used Painter before, I suggest taking A Fresh Start, The New Painter 2019. which has a complete beginner's class included. Then take Painter 2021: Loads of New Stuff .
Following is a list of features covered in this class, but I always cover a lot more. Ask anyone who has taken a class from me before.
List of Features:
Performance Optimization - This feature was new last year, but this year it has been taken to the next level. The enhanced Brush Accelerator is more intuitive and evaluates your system’s CPU, GPU, and memory to optimize application settings for better performance. It also offers suggestions on how to upgrade system components, as well as recommendations on which brush categories are most compatible with your computer.
Enhanced User Interface Elements - Painter 2019 improved the UI; Painter 2020 revamped the UI; Painter 2021 matures the UI. I thought the UI couldn't get any better after Painter 2019 and 2020. I was wrong. There are new command bars: File/Edit, Canvas, and Photo Art, which allow the user to customize toolbar use. You are going to love all the changes to the UI concerning thick paint. In fact, thick paint will be the go to medium for most users. But, as always, there is a learning curve. This course will tame the learning curve.
Enhanced New Image Dialog Box - To be honest, if you had told me about this change, I would have thought, who needs it? But it is one of my favorite new features. Before the image is opened, you can start your document by creating a Thick Paint, Watercolor, or Liquid Ink layer, setting canvas visibility and orientation, and choosing a color profile. I am surprised how much I like this feature.
New A.I. Style panel and transfers - This feature made its debut last year in Painter Essentials. In Painter it is updated and given tons of user controls. Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) is used to create a style from a photo; that is the basic concept. But, It is so much more than that. It can be used to add style to a sketch, painting, or to just a few brush marks. The result can be used for inspiration or even an under-painting to help the user get started. A.I. options are infinite, but can be simplified by using customizable presets. A.I. Styles is a very useful tool.
New Layer Compatibility - OMGosh, this new feature is the main reason to upgrade! Not only can you tell at a glance which brushes can be used on which layers, most impasto variants can now be used on Thick Paint layers. I know the term thick paint implies that the paint is applied thickly, which isn't true. Thick paint can be applied thinly and so can variants that use impasto. Thick paint variants with impasto compatibility are a game changer in Painter. But there is more. A default layer can be changed to a thick paint layer with a single click, or the layer can be dropped to the canvas and lifted as a thick paint layer. Watercolor already had the drop and lift feature, but a default layer can be changed to a watercolor layer. Along with the feature, the layers panel contains new features, and there is so much more. I can't wait to show you how this feature works.
New Clone Tinting - This feature adds a new level of creativity to cloning. It works with any brush that can use clone color. The source color can be altered completely or tinted with any other color. The feature is difficult to describe but easily shown in a video. I like to use clone tinting with one of my original paintings or sketches as a clone source and alter or tint the original. Photo-artists are going to do cartwheels when they see how this feature works.
Two New Brush Categories - Painter 2021 introduces Clone Tinting and Thick Paint Compatible brush categories. I have new favorite variants in these categories. These brushes take full advantage of the new features, Clone-Tinting and Thick Paint Compatibility. I show you how to tweak them and make them more useful for your workflow.
Mac Enhancements - There are many new features available for Mac users specific to Mac hardware and OS. For instance, Painter can use your iPad as a secondary display that mirrors your Mac desktop. The Painter user interface will auto-adjust based on the resolution of your iPad. I do not have an iPad or a Mac and cannot demonstrate this new feature, but i do give enough information for you to explore the new Apple features. Others are Apple touch bar support, Apple pencil tilt support, Apple Trackpad support, and Apple Core ML (machine learning) support.
Registration starts on Tuesday, 23 June 2020 and the Lesson 1 begins Saturday, 27 June 2020.
