Nicola Brown

I am passionate about using natural materials and local vegetation to create decorative art, interior accessories and luxurious art to wear. My current fine art textile practice revolves around the use of felt making, eco printing and natural dyeing: I grow most of my own print and dye materials. Eco printing is a simple process where natural fabric including hand made felt, silk, linen and lambswool is wrapped with leaves, onion skins, seed pods, bark and other foraged vegetation. These bundles are tied up tightly then go through a heating process to help extract colour directly from the organic matter.

About this course

Please note, the emphasis during this 6 module online workshop is firmly on eco printing protein and cellulose based fabrics (wool, silk, handmade felt, linen, hemp, cotton etc.) without the use of traditional powered mordants. I will also share step by step instructions, tips and advice in module 1 about creating beautiful flat felt with a view to printing it.

In as much as facilitating an online workshop makes it possible, joining me for this textile adventure will feel almost as if you are actually in the garden studio at Clasheen with me or I'm in your house looking over your shoulder! The course is an amalgamation of selected content from previous online workshops with upgraded information and plenty of new videos to reflect the advances in my own textile practice. If you have already participated in a 6 module online workshop with me prior to 2020 there will be plenty of new content! Ask yourself the following questions.....

Are you interested in learning how to create beautiful and colourful washable prints on handmade felt, natural fabrics and up-cycled clothing?

Does working in a health conscious and environmentally mindful way appeal to you?

Are you an experienced eco printer but have previously only worked using traditional powered mordants?

Would you like to learn tips and advise about working without these and discover the secret of successfully processing your pieces using a magic 'dirty pot'?

Are you an experienced felter but have never tried eco printing or an experienced eco printer who has never tried felting?

Are you a total newcomer who would like to learn new techniques in a fun and supportive environment?

Would you like to revamp your clothing and learn how to up-cycle garments using the simplicity of the eco printing process?

Are you a sewist who would like to print your own yardage and hand sewn clothes?

Have you health issues which mean that getting tips about how replacing rolling by hand with agitation in a tumble dryer will revolutionise how you think of the physicality of felting?

Are you interested in discovering which vegetation gives me the best results and substantive prints using these methods? Because I have plenty of international teaching experience I do have suggestions from different regions of the world, not just Ireland!

Would you like to see how I print paper to use as gift cards?

Would you enjoy being part of an interactive workshop where friendships are made and beautiful work created?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions why not join me for this intensive and comprehensive workshop? Because of the current worldwide crisis and the fact that many people are limiting their social interaction (including me!) I will be able to do this from the comfort and safety of my studio at Clasheen while you are in your own safe environment too. I am offering this workshop at a lower price than 6 module courses prior to Covid-19, a little gift to you during this difficult time.

I'll be at the other end of my computer daily for a total of 8 weeks from the start date of Friday 11th September to offer support, advice, feedback and answer all your questions.  After the last workshop module is released on Friday 16th October the workshop content will be available to you online for a further 8 weeks right up until Friday 18th December. For this latter part of the workshop I will still offer support and feedback but it will be once or twice weekly rather than on a daily basis. This means that if life gets in the way during our hands on time together you will still be able to work through the course content at a time and pace to suit yourself! In addition to the online lessons you will be able to download a selection of PDFs covering important aspects of the workshop and save these for future reference.

Throughout the workshop I will be sharing tips, advice and detailed step by step instructions through text, images and plenty of short little video clips. By the end of our time together you should have learnt the necessary techniques to print beautiful fabric, clothing and paper in as simple a way possible. If you are already an experienced felter you are welcome to make 3 dimensional pieces yourselves and I am happy to give you feedback and advice about them too, I won't however be providing step by step instructions for making them during this particular course. There will also be an optional private Facebook group run in tandem with the workshop where participants can meet, chat, get to know each other better and share images of the pieces that they create as we progress through the modules.
